COVID-19 UPDATES

June 6, 2020

After great deliberation, the Directors of the Durham Junior Golf Tour regretfully announce the cancellation of its 2020 Summer Season due to the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic.

After the usual pre-season planning combined with working with our industry partners, closely monitoring the situation, considering the financial impact on the golf industry as well as a great deal of waiting and hoping, the Directors of the Durham Junior Golf Tour unanimously decided to cancel our 2020 Summer Season.  At this time, we are unable to provide the golfing experience that players and parents have come to expect from our tour, in partnership with our host golf facilities, while still safeguarding the health, safety and well-being of our players and their families, our volunteers, our partners and the general public within our local competitive golfing community.

The DJGT was about to enter its 28th year of providing the regions premier junior golf series for both male and female golfers. The tours programs and goals are designed to provide our juniors with the opportunity to experience golf under tournament conditions and at the same time, learn the Rules of Golf, building individual character, integrity, meeting new friends and developing sportsmanship. All of this, while having fun!  The current situation with the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic has made it extremely challenging to be able to provide this competitive golf experience this summer.

In addition, teams of DJGT competitors would have participated in the Ontario Summer Games in London and the Humber Cup / Ontario Junior Tours Championship in the Ottawa area at the end of August, which has been postponed until 2021.

We wish to thank our corporate partners and host golf courses for their continued support of junior golf and the Durham Junior Golf Tour.  We encourage you to support Baxter Creek Golf Club, Cedarhurst Golf Club, Dalewood Golf Club, Deer Creek Golf Club, Kawartha Golf & Country Club, Lindsay Golf & Country Club, Oakridge Golf Club, Oshawa Golf & Curling Club, Quarry Golf Club, Salem Ridge Golf & Academy, Timber Ridge Golf Course, Watson’s Glen Golf Club and Wildfire Golf Club this golf season.

The DJGT would like to let our returning exempt players know that their 2020 exemptions will carry over to the 2021 season provided that the exempt player remains age eligible and wishes to continue playing our tour.  Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact either Jane or Jeffrey Iceton.

We at the Durham Junior Golf Tour are committed to the safety and well-being of our players and their families, our volunteers, our partners and the general public during this very trying time.  We hope that you are all keeping safe and staying healthy.  It certainly seems that the country is on the right track with flattening the curve of COVID-19 and it is very encouraging to see the improving conditions.  Thank you for doing your part!

Another encouraging sign is to hear that the Ontario Government announced yesterday that golf courses can open for business as of Saturday May 16th, 2020.  While we are excited to hear this, we continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation with respect to our 2020 competitive schedule.  We are committed to making informed and responsible decisions that protect our players, their families, our partners and volunteers.  We will continue to make the necessary operational modifications in order to adhere to government, as well as our host facilities guidelines to ensure a safe environment for everyone involved.

Registration for 2020 tour events will open once we feel confident that we can provide our junior golfers with a competitive and safe golfing experience while protecting the integrity of the game.  We will continue to update you and information will be posted to our website once decisions have been finalized.

Never before have we each individually had such a direct effect on others’ health.  Please continue to keep up the good work!

Cancellation of the Rookie Tour program for the 2020 season

Parents and spectators will not be permitted at tour events. This includes the entire playing area, driving range, putting green, registration and scoring areas.

The following amenities will no longer be provided at tour events: water, snacks, fruit, lunch, tees and pencils.

We continue to monitor the Covid-19 situation and we will be making the necessary rules modifications to ensure the safety of our players, their families, our partners and volunteers.  Registration for 2020 tour events will open once we feel confident that we can provide our junior golfers with a safe golfing experience.

In light of the current situation surrounding the COVID-19 virus and the recommendations of local, provincial and federal health agencies, the Durham Junior Golf Tour  is committed to the health and safety of our players, their families, our volunteers and the general public.  We want to reassure everyone that we are closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation and are taking all necessary precautions to prevent the spread of the virus.  Our hearts go out to our first responders and all frontline workers.  We appreciate the fact that they are laying their lives on the line for all of us.

As the COVID-19 situation has been unfolding, we are continuing to revise our policies and procedures of the DJGT.  We will continue to work with our industry partners and closely monitor the situation in order to provide regular updates regarding the DJGT scheduled qualifiers and the tour season as new information becomes available.  As we remain hopeful that the 2020 golf season will get underway as planned, we also anticipate that there may be some scheduling changes as this situation unfolds.  At this time, we believe it is wise to wait and see what the next week or two brings before making these decisions.  We will continue to update you and information will also be posted to our website when any decisions have been finalized.
